Indications and outcomes of emergency obstetric hysterectomy; a 5-year review at the Bafoussam Regional Hospital, Cameroon

Abstract Background Emergency Obstetric Hysterectomy (EOH) is removal of the uterus due to life threatening conditions within puerperium. This saving intervention associated with complications. In our setting, little known on EOH. Objectives To determine prevalence, indications and outcomes emergency obstetric hysterectomy while comparing both postpartum caesarean hysterectomy. Methods A 5-year hospital-based retrospective cohort study involving medical records patients who underwent hysterectomies between 1st January 2015 31st December 2019, was carried out at Bafoussam Regional Hospital (BRH) from February 2020 30th April 2020. Cases were classified as (CH) or (PH). Epidemiological data, indications, complications EOH collected analyzed in EPI-INFO 7.2.2.1. The chi-squared test used compare two groups, bivariate analysis identify indicators adverse Statistical significance set p < 0.05. Results There 30 cases (24 6 hysterectomies), giving a prevalence rate 3.75 per 1000 deliveries. most common indication for CH, intractable haemorrhage uterine rupture (33.33% each), abnormal placentation (50%) commonly indicated PH.
